Pros & Cons – Pit Boss Platinum Laredo 1000

Hi, I’m Chris. About Me

The Pit Boss Platinum range of pellet grills/smokers is exclusively sold at Walmart. Currently, the smallest model within the range is the Laredo 1000. However, the Platinum Laredo has been on the market for several years at this point, and there are better Pit Boss options available. Right, let’s review its Pros & Cons.

As of writing this article, the Platinum Laredo is currently the cheapest full-sized Pit Boss pellet grill/smoker in our database that comes with WiFi connectivity and App support.

With a price point close to 500 dollars the Platinum Laredo is one of the cheapest Pit Boss models with WiFi.
If you’re after WiFi connectivity and the use of the Pit Boss SmokeIT App on a budget, you may want to consider the Laredo

Now, if you spend most of your time grilling, WiFi connectivity and App support should not be your focus. However, on long smoking sessions, keeping an eye on the pellet smoker from a distance is very useful.

Several times when the Platinum Laredo was launched, I read articles making a big deal about its 1,000 sq. cooking area. However, it doesn’t appear that many people really know what it refers to.

While the total cooking area on the Pit Boss Platinum Laredo is 1,000 sq.in, the main grate is much smaller.
Yes, the Laredo provides a total of 1,000 sq.in of cooking area, but that’s over three racks

The main grate is where most of the people who own any grill/smoker spend most of their time cooking. While 1,000 sq.in is available, the main grate is actually much smaller at 528 sq.in.

The average size for a pellet hopper on many pellet grills/smokers is 20 lbs, or slightly less. That can be quite frustrating, as a full bag of BBQ pellets is often 20 lbs.

The size of the pellet hopper on the Pit Boss Platinum Laredo is above average at 27 lbs.
The pellet hopper on the Pit Boss Platinum Laredo is 27 lbs

With a pellet hopper of this size, it means when there is around 7 lbs left in the hopper, you are able to fill it up with an entire new bag without having to gently meter in the bag to not overflow the hopper.

The Platinum Laredo has been on the market since 2021. Therefore, we have quite a bit of data on customer feedback available to us, and quite a bit of it is not that positive.

These are several reports of owners unhappy with the paint finish on the Platinum Laredo.
Of the owner complaints, one of the most common issues appears to be the paint finish

Now, with any cheap/budget pellet grill, you have to keep your expectations in check. However, it would appear there is a recurring issue with the paint finish on this particular pellet grill.

An area where the Platinum Laredo and Pit Boss pellet grills, in general, perform pretty well is in their grilling and searing performance due to the inclusion of a flame broiler.

The flame broiler on the Pit Boss Platinum Laredo means it can do an excellent job with steaks and burgers.
The flame broiler on the Laredo will do an excellent job with steaks and burgers etc

A word of caution though, if you do own/purchase a pellet grill with direct-flame access/flame broiler, please keep the grease tray clean to avoid a grease fire when using it.

The Platinum range were the first Pit Boss products to feature PID temperature control technology. However, these controllers do appear to have a few issues with temperature regulation.

The controller fitted to the Laredo is not the best controller Pit Boss currently fits to their products.

Reading through the owner’s comments, there are several complaints about the controller not maintaining an accurate temperature which is disappointing.

My Final Thoughts On The Pit Boss Platinum Laredo

When the Pit Boss Platinum Laredo was first launched, it seemed like a really good deal. With its price point close to $500, PID temperature control, WiFi/App support, and flame broiler etc.

However, as time has gone on, customer reviews have begun to show this pellet grill/smoker has its fair share of issues. Furthermore, there are now better Pit Boss options for similar money, such as the Competition Series 850.
