A standard pellet grill does not use propane, all the heat and smoke comes from the combustion of hardwood BBQ pellets.

However, there are pellet/gas combo grills from a range of manufacturers where a propane tank is attached.

Some of these pellet/gas combo grills have propane burners within the same cooking chamber as the pellet burn pot. Whereas in other models, the propane cooking chamber is separate, or the propane is used to fuel a side burner.
