Example Question:
Does a pellet grill taste like charcoal?
Generally speaking food cooked on a pellet grill/smoker will have a lighter/softer and more subtle flavor of smoke compared to a charcoal grill/smoker.
The reason is, while a pellet grill/smoker does use real hardwood (in pellet form) the benefit of precise automated temperature control means less smoke production as a result.
Now, there are 'Smoke Settings' that can increase the amount of smoke a pellet grill/smoker will produce (along with wider temperature swings). However, still, gernally speaking, a pellet grill/smoker provides a lighter smoke flavor.
I should note though we are now seeing more pellet grills/smokers come onto the market with an additional 'Smoke Box' that can be loaded with wood chips, wood chunks, or charcoal which can increase smoke production while the pellets are used to provide the majority of the heat to cook the food and some of the smoke.
