Example Question:
Is a pellet grill really a smoker?
This question comes in relation to the amount of smoke that pellet grills/smokers produce compared to offset/stick burners or barrel charcoal smokers, for instance.
Will a pellet grill/smoker produce as much smoke as these alternative BBQs? No, with a pellet grill/smoker you will get a lighter smoke flavor into your food for the simple reason not as much smoke is produced.
Now, there are certain pellet grills/smokers that can produce more smoke, such as the Camp Chef Woodwind Pro or the Members Mark 33" pellet smoker, due to their added smoke box. However, they still won't produce as much smoke as an offset smoker, for instance.
However, whether this is a good thing or a bad thing, it all depends on personal preference. For me personally I only want a lighter smoke flavor in my foods. You also have to trade off the lighter smoke flavor with the advantages of the automated nature of pellet grills/smokers and their time savings.
