You cannot/shouldn't really compare the price point of a charcoal/gas grill against a pellet grill of a similar size and be surprised that the pellet grill costs more.

A gas/charcoal grill has very few moving/electrical components, they are very basic BBQs. A pellet grill/smoker, on the other hand, has a fuel hopper with a motorized feed auger, a fan that feeds the fire with air, a hot rod igniter that gets the fire going, a temperature probe, and a computer/controller that runs the whole process.

As a result, a pellet grill/smoker can maintain a set temperature that can be precisely adjusted as and when needed. If the pellet grill/smoker then comes with WiFi connectivity, the process can then be monitored and adjusted from pretty much anywhere with a cellular connection.
