Example Question:
Why is my pellet grill not smoking?
Pellet grills only typically produce smoke at lower temperature settings, mainly between 180 to 225 degrees. The higher the temperature, the less smoke a pellet grill is going to produce. Therefore, when running at its maximum temperature setting (500 to 700 degrees) a pellet grill is going to be producing very little smoke indeed.
The reason is a pellet grill produces more smoke when the pellet fire is less efficient and the pellets are smoldering for longer. Therefore, pellet grills with a P-Setting (Pause Setting) or dedicated Smoke Setting will produce the most smoke.
Now, modern pellet grills have what's called a PID controller, which uses a mathematical algorithm to precisely adjust the fuel/air mixture to achieve very stable accurate temperature control. However, a very accurate/stable temperature also means less smoke.
Therefore, if you are looking for a pellet grill with a PID controller for accurate temperature control but you also want as much smoke as possible, make sure it still has a P-Setting/Smoke Setting.
