Smoked Pumkin Pie Anyone? You May Actually Be Pleasantly Surprised

Hi, I’m Chris. About Me

Pumpkin pie is a dessert we all love (most of us). How about changing it up a little? In the experiment below, two pumpkin pies were prepared identically, with the same mixture and base. The only difference was how they were cooked. One went in the oven, while the other was smoked with a block of Pecan. Worth a try?

Step 1: The mixture for the two pumpkin pies started with two cans of condensed milk.
Step 2: Along with a whole tin of pumpkin pie filling.
Step 3: Then, two tablespoons of pumpkin pie spice were added, along with two tablespoons of cinnamon powder.
Step 4: To provide the sweetness, a couple of glugs of maple syrup were then added.
Step 5: To bring out the flavor of the pumpkin mix, just a pin of salt was added.
Step 6: Finally, four eggs were broken and added to complete the pumpkin pie ingredients.
Step 7: Then, it was simply a case of mixing it all together. Go slowly at the start or all those powdered ingredients are going to come flying out of the bowl.
Step 8: This is what you’re aiming for, a nice, consistent pumpkin pie mix.
Step 9: The mixture was then added to two frozen store-bought pie bases. Not ideal, but remember the objective of the test was to see if a smoked or unsmoked pie tasted better.
Step 10: The pie that went into the pellet smoker was placed on a baking tray to deflect some of the smoke coming from the Woodwind Pro, which makes sense, as you would only want a light hit of smoke.
Step 11: The pellet smoker was rolling at 325 degrees when the pumpkin pie was placed in there, and this is what it looked like after an hour of cooking/smoking.
Step 12: This is the pumpkin pie taken from the oven after an hour. In terms of appearance, its hard to tell between them.
Step 13: After the pies were left to cool, at room temperature, at first for an hour, and then placed in the fridge for another hour before being sliced into.
Step 14: And to finish, every slice of pumpkin pie has to be finished with a good scoop of whipped cream.

So the guys at Camp Chef, when they tasted the two different pumpkin pies, all decided that the smoked pie tasted better. Then again, they make smokers, so obviously take that into consideration.

However, if you do have the means to try this, I would encourage you to do so, as getting a bit of light smoke flavor into pastry as it bakes can make a nice change fo flavor.
